World Environment Day 2025: MWOG Group Joins the Global Movement to Beat Plastic Pollution

On June 5, 2025, the world unites once again to mark World Environment Day, this year under the crucial theme: “Beat Plastic Pollution.” With over 400 million tonnes of plastic produced annually, and only 10% recycled, plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental and public health threats of our time. The United Nations warns that without immediate action, plastic waste in aquatic ecosystems could triple by 2040, endangering biodiversity, food security, and human health.

In Nigeria, the crisis is equally severe. Cities like Lagos generate over 15,000 tonnes of waste daily, with plastic accounting for a significant portion. Poor waste management systems, flooding caused by blocked drainage, and rising public health costs are just some of the consequences. The economic toll is also costly as plastic pollution costs the global economy over $100 billion annually, and in Nigeria, it undermines tourism, fisheries, and infrastructure.

In alignment with this year’s theme, Midwestern Oil & Gas Company Limited, a proudly indigenous energy firm, has taken bold steps to combat plastic pollution in its host communities in Kwale, Delta State. The company commemorated this year’s event with a series of impactful, community-driven initiatives such as:

  • Tree planting of over 200 species to promote biodiversity and preserve our natural environment.
  • Community Cleanup Campaigns across our host communities.
  • Environmental Education and Awareness Session to educate residents, employees on reducing plastics waste and adapting eco-friendly alternatives.

These activities led by our Asset Manager, Marcus Amuche, representing the MD/CEO, Mr. Oboden Ibru and Field Superintendent, Nonso Mgbatogu, were carried out across our operational base with support from various departments and the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA).

This event’s success was driven by the unwavering commitment and coordination of our Quality, Health, Security and Environment (QHSE) team, who led planning and execution in line with our environmental standards. Their leadership reflects Midwestern’s dedication to sustainability and operational excellence.

We commend the entire QHSE team, led by Head of QHSE Anthony Okoye and applaud our Field QHSE Supervisors, Engr. Clement Ihimekpen and Obinna Onyekwere for their pivotal roles in this impactful celebration and for consistently upholding our core values.

As the world moves toward a global treaty to end plastic pollution, Midwestern is proud to be part of the solution, demonstrating that indigenous leadership, community engagement, and operational innovation can drive meaningful environmental change. To our partners, stakeholders, staff, and the broader community: Let’s keep the momentum alive. Let’s end plastic pollution – TOGETHER
